Proof of immunizations (TST, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, Tdap and influenza)
Required Previous Experience:
The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate that he/she has performed at least 75 general surgical procedures during the past 24 months. A letter of reference must come from the residency director or chief of surgery from another hospital where applicant has been affiliated for the last two years.
Scope of Care:
Contractor physician(s) shall provide clinical General surgery services. Contractor physician(s) shall be present on time for any scheduled clinics/surgeries as documented by physical presence in the clinic or operating room at the scheduled start time.
Operative Services: Contractor physician(s) shall provide comprehensive clinical General surgery services.
Contractor physician(s) shall provide consultative services at the patient’s bedside if the patient is not ambulatory and in the clinic setting if the patient is able to report to the outpatient clinic. Procedures shall be scheduled for completion within 30 days of the date of the consult.
Medications: Contractor physician(s) shall follow all established medication policies and procedures. No sample medications shall be provided to patients.
Discharge education: Contractor physician(s) shall provide discharge education and follow up instructions that are coordinated with the next care setting for all General surgery clinical or surgical patients.
Procedures to include but not limited to: inguinal hernia repair, ventral hernia repair, exploratory laparoscopy, exploratory laparotomy, laparoscopic and open cholecystectomy , surgery for perforated duodenal ulcer, partial gastrectomy, bowel resection ( large bowel and small bowel), placement of central lines including dialysis catheters and subcutaneous ports, placement of chest tubes, tracheostomy, appendectomy, excision of benign and malignant skin lesions, surgical treatment of anorectal disease including hemorrhoids, anal fistulas and abscesses, basic wound care management, occasional assistance provided to vascular surgery when on call, postoperative management including ICU care with assistance of intensivists who are present 24/7, abscess drainage, lower extremity amputations, evaluation of breast disease and management, lymph node biopsy where indicated.
No requirement for endoscopy unless one wishes to perform them.
Routine clinic evaluation of patients. Coverage of ER as mentioned above call.

VA Business Hours:
Clinic days: 0800-1630, Operating Room Days: 0800- End of last procedure.
Clinic or OR Schedule: Monday – Friday, Clinic and OR day(s) negotiable based on needs of immediate patient care.
Surgical on call is taken from home ( no more than 30 minutes away) every 3
night and every third weekend and occasionally every other night or weekend, when needed. Mostly every 3
