Under the direction of the Administrator and Medical Director of the UCLA Pain Management Center, the incumbent is responsible for physical examination and medical assessment of chronic pain patients in both the outpatient and inpatient setting. In addition to evaluating new patients, the Physician Assistant will perform follow-up care of previously seen patients in clinic, and will see inpatient consults and round on inpatients on the pain service daily. The Physician Assistant may assist in the performance of procedures, should there be procedures scheduled. The Physician Assistant will be responsible in maintaining the inpatient census for the pain service, and also be responsible for follow-up care of patients via phone calls and prescription writing.


Current certification as a Physician Assistant licensed in the State of California.

Ability to obtain complete, accurate, and appropriate patient information including history and physical examination, order diagnostic test to satisfy a full pain management evaluation, able to identify normal and abnormal findings on history, physician examinations and commonly performed laboratory studies.

Skill in making decisions regarding gathered data and appropriate management and treatment of patients being seen both for initial evaluation as well as follow-up.

Preparing of patient summaries and letters, disability forms, and insurance forms.

Ability to perform non-operative Pain procedures, including injections.

Demonstrated knowledge on evaluating implanted devices as well as maintaining and refilling devices such as opioid pumps via percutaneous needle stick.

Ability to provide individualized pre-operative and post-operative discharge teaching to patient and family, teach patient wound care management, and perform wound care, debride incision and remove sutures and staples.

Ability to work effectively with Pain physicians and other health team members to meet comprehensive needs of patients.

Capability to practice independently and to communicate closely and knowledgeably with physicians and staff.

Current ACLS certification.
